LIPEDEMIA OVERVIEW

Lipedema is a chronic condition causing abnormal fat distribution, mainly in the legs, thighs, buttocks, and arms.

GENETIC AND
HORMONAL CAUSES

The condition is believed to have genetic and hormonal causes.

COMMON
SYMPTOMS

Common symptoms include pain, swelling, bruising, and skin irregularities. It mainly affects women, particularly during puberty, pregnancy, or menopause.

MISCONCEPTION
WITH OBESITY

It is often confused with obesity but is not caused by overeating or lack of exercise.

TREATMENT AND
IMPORTANCE OF EARLY
DIAGNOSIS

Treatment requires a personalized, long-term approach, with liposuction being an effective method to reduce fat and alleviate discomfort. Early diagnosis and comprehensive care are key to lasting results.

01
Liposuction
(Liposculpture)

Liposuction, particularly advanced techniques like water-assisted liposuction (WAL) and vibroliposuction, is one of the most effective ways to reduce excess fat caused by lipedema. These minimally invasive procedures help remove stubborn fat, alleviate pain, and improve mobility, leading to enhanced comfort and quality of life.

02
COMPRESSION
THERAPY

Compression garments, such as specialized stockings and sleeves, are essential for managing swelling and improving lymphatic drainage. These garments help reduce fluid buildup in affected areas, especially in the early stages of lipedema, and promote better circulation for long-term symptom control.

Manual Lymphatic
Drainage
(MLD)

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a therapeutic massage technique designed to stimulate the lymphatic system, reducing swelling and improving fluid flow. This non-invasive treatment is especially beneficial for those with lymphedema and works in combination with other therapies to relieve pain and discomfort.

STAGES of LIPEDEMIA

Lipedema progresses through four main stages, each characterized by different levels of fat accumulation and associated symptoms. Understanding these stages can help in identifying the condition and choosing the appropriate treatment.

STAGE

(01)

In this early stage, fat begins to accumulate, primarily in the thighs, hips, and calves. The fat tissue remains smooth, with no visible skin irregularities.

    • Symptoms: Mild pain, a feeling of heaviness, and slight swelling.
    • This stage is often subtle and can be difficult to detect, as changes in the body are not yet prominent.

STAGE

(02)

As lipedema progresses, fat becomes more fibrous and forms visible lumps and bumps on the skin, resembling “orange peel” texture.

    • Symptoms: Increased pain, swelling, easy bruising, and more noticeable heaviness in the legs.
    • At this stage, the condition becomes more visible, and discomfort may begin to significantly affect daily activities.

STAGE

(03)

The fat accumulation becomes more pronounced, leading to noticeable deformities in the lower body. This stage often results in larger, disproportionate limbs.

    • Symptoms: Intense pain, persistent swelling, mobility issues, and difficulty with circulation.
    • The physical changes are more evident, and patients may experience substantial limitations in movement and daily tasks.

STAGE

(04)

In the most advanced stage, fat accumulation is severe, and the skin may become hard and fibrotic. There is a risk of developing lipolymphedema (a combination of lipedema and lymphatic edema).

    • Symptoms: Severe pain, extensive swelling, limited mobility, and significant body deformities.
    • This stage typically requires intensive medical intervention, including surgical options like liposuction, to improve quality of life and functionality.
